Grindr Unwrapped provides users with some extra gifts to open the holidays at the end of the year. This is an informal statistical report that reveals Grindr activities in a year. The inspiration for the event comes from Spotify’s annual Spotify Wrapped. Grindr looks forward to every December. It tells users that many people are doing the same thing with you during this year. Look at the sex and dating trends of the nearly 13 million gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people who use the app every month.

It should be noted that this is not a comprehensive or scientific report on global queer sex and dating behaviour. On the contrary, it is a fun and informal way to help our users better understand each other as an icebreaker for conversations in the app and provide some insights into the trend of Grindr activities each year. For example, in Grindr Unwrapped in 2020, users were able to see where the memorable highlights come from during the year or know which countries most users come from. To celebrate Halloween in 2021, Grindr held an offline #FrightNow public event in several cities in the United States, such as NYC, LA, Seattle, and Chicago.

Open Grindr in London, the user would see a group of qualified men, mainly looking for hook-ups. In Beirut, people are more likely to see a headless torso because few people are willing to disclose themselves. While in Tokyo, it’s strange that dozens of users replaced their profile photos with food pictures because many users don’t like to show their faces online, but they have large picture folders that they took.

The use of dating apps varies from culture, but in Grindr, nowhere is the difference more evident than in the 72 countries where same-sex activity is illegal. The app can be a positive force for these societies, helping to build LGBT communities where there is no safe gathering space. But it can also bring danger from thieves and undercover police who might create a society where sharing photos of your face might get you in jail.

Therefore, Grindr includes some security features in its so-called "dangerous neighbouring countries". For example, after Uganda earlier attacked a gay bar and 67 people were charged; Two Indonesian men were publicly whipped after having sex; And in Egypt, police are known for using Grindr to trap and arrest gay men. In these countries/regions, Grindr provides suggestions on how to meet safely in local languages, and its location feature can be disabled by acquiescing, which means that LGBT users at risk are more likely to hide.
