In the article called “What if we lay cards on the table”, I told you about the fruits which are the key elements of
differentiation of the brand. Indeed, Fruitz promises matches between people that have the same expectations, which remains the only one doing so. I found this really clever, however I was wondering if it actually works.
Are people really transparent towards others regarding their desires? Do people assume their desires, especially when it comes to choosing a peach or a watermelon? Thus, is the choice of the fruit always consistent with their expectations?
To answer this, I have decided to interview people through a survey.
Regarding the application itself, respondents all agree to say that the concept is good as it allows users to know what to expect while looking at other profiles and gets rid of false hopes.
So far, all the comments were positive regarding the concept. However, I wanted to know what they think about the transparency of users regarding the fruit selected.
What I found was absolutely interesting! While the brand positions itself as the solution for more transparency in terms of expectations, 72,8% respondents consider the application not reliable, the users not being honest regarding their desires.
“Some users do not select the cheery afraid of appearing too serious, some users do not select peach afraid of appearing too open minded”
Only 11,4% of respondents claim that users select the fruit that corresponds with their desire, and the rest of respondents consider that it depends. Some users even explain in their profile description being open to any fruit. But if the concept is precisely to assume its choices, why are users not transparent?
24% of respondents have admitted that the choice of fruit did not correspond to their real expectations, preferring to choose a bunch of grapes while looking for a peach. It seems that lots of people are not assuming to select peach and watermelon.
“As only a few are selecting peach or watermelon, I prefer to select a bunch of grapes to have access to more profiles”
Users are not transparent as they consider that they could maximize their chance to meet someone with a bunch of grapes than with a peach or watermelon that could afraid others. Then, they all advise selecting grapes even if one’s expectations are closer to peach or watermelon. Peach and watermelon appear as forbidden fruits.
Therefore, the fruit that is the most chosen in the app is the bunch of grapes, 53,8% of my respondents have selected it. Only looking at this figure, we could conclude that we have a majority of users looking for serious relationships or for having a relaxing drink on a cozy terrace which is actually not the case.
At the end, as most users turn away the concept to their advantage, the fruit doesn’t actually correspond to the research, recreating confusion in expectations that founders aimed initially to remove.
Nevertheless, 80,8% of respondents declare to be satisfied with the concept as it allows them to move away from basic and formal dating apps.
Finally, the concept of choosing fruit to express one’s desire is really clever, but in reality, it seems that the selection is not always appropriated. Thus, if you are using this application, what I may advise you is to keep in mind that the fruit is not always relevant, and you may need to go further in discussion to discover if you actually have the same expectations.
