What Fruitz offers to its user
What if I put myself in the shoes of a Fruitz user? To tell you the truth, I did not create a profile but had the chance to read lots of feedback to understand as best as possible the user experience. The question that immediately came to my mind was: Is the experience the same no matter the gender? I promise you will have the answer very soon but first let’s remember who are the users.
Who are they?
Users are members between 18 and 35 years old, with a maximum age set at 55 years old, but most of the time, users are in their twenties.
With 5 millions of users, the brand has had great success in France but also in North America and in 8 European countries. Hence, the target is quite young, more or less the same users that we can find on Tinder.
Features
The principle is roughly the same as other dating apps. Users have access to profiles, they have the choice to swipe right or left. Once two persons match themselves, it forms what the app calls a smoothie, and hence they can start discussing. One of the specific features is the crushnote which gives the possibility to users to send a message to someone without swiping, giving you potentially more chance to have a match, with a limited number per day. A little extra that allows the brand to stand out.
The brand wishes to offer a comfort zone for every user as it has chosen to automatically blur dirty pictures, it’s up to the user to choose to visualize it or not.
Enough about features, I know that you are waiting for the difference in user experience between genders, here we are!
Difference in user experience between men and women
The big difference is the following: Women can see the fruit selected by man before matching, which is free and unlimited. In contrast, men can only see the fruit selected by women before matching for 3 profiles per day. From my point of view, there is a real paradox between this and what the app stands for: while the app aims at showing users desires without taboo, it prevents a part of users, here the man, to know women’s expectations before matching.
What if we try to understand why are they doing so?
First, as for any dating apps, the willingness to pay is higher for men. In France, 45% of men have already paid for using an app against 18% of women. In addition to this, men are overrepresented on the apps, users are mostly male. Women are considered as a scarce resource and because of that men are more likely to pay.
But above all…It allows men to match with women without a priori and prevents women from slutshaming.
Slutshaming is a phenomenon that needs to be taken seriously into account, especially when it comes to dating apps. It’s the fact of making a woman feel guilty because of her sexual behaviour. If men would have access to the fruit selected by women, then women would be feared of slutshaming and would probably not dare to choose peach or watermelon because of this. Hence, this difference made by the app offers a free space to express women's desires without any fear and allows users to match whatever their desire is.
Matching is good but what’s next?
Juicy questions as an ice breaker
As starting a conversation can be a tricky part for both the man and the woman, the application proposes to break the ice by asking each of them to choose a question among a list and waits for the other to answer. Once answers are recorded, the conversation can start.
It allows users to get rid of banal discussions and lighten the mood. Typical question can be “Would you prefer to win 1 million of euros or have a 50-50 shot to win 100 million?”
By replying to unusual questions, ice breakers sharpen mutual curiosity, create a dynamic within the discussion and give clues regarding personality traits of users.
Readers, I hope this article allowed you to project yourself as a Fruitz user and who knows maybe made you want to be part of the Fruitz community !
